Now a college graduate, Amanda Bynes is “working on herself” amid her recovery and a new rehab stint.
The 33-year-old Hairspray and Easy A actress had checked into a facility in January after a “relapse” and had sought treatment from mental health professionals and addiction counselors for drug addiction and mental health issues, multiple outlets reported in March.
“Amanda is doing great, working on herself, and taking some well-deserved time off to focus on her wellbeing after graduating FIDM [Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising] in December,” Bynes’ family’s attorney, Tamar Arminak, said in a statement to E! News.
“She’s spending time reading and exercising, sketching for her new line and mostly making sure this time around she puts her needs first,” the lawyer added.
The actress had enrolled at FIDM, a for-profit California college, in early 2014, weeks after she left a treatment facility and months after she was placed on an involuntary 5150 psychiatric hold in her hometown of Thousand Oaks following legal and personal turmoil and a slew of disturbing tweets, which had prompted a judge to place her under the custody of her parents.
In fall 2014, Bynes was arrested on suspicion of DUI, a case that was later dismissed, and later again sought help at a treatment facility and remained there for a month. She tweeted that she had been diagnosed as bipolar and manic depressive.
She returned to FIDM a year later. A source close to Bynes told E! News in March 2018 that the actress was on track to graduate the following fall. Bynes told Paper magazine in a November 2018 interview that she would receive her Associate’s of Art degree in Merchandise Product Development that month before embarking on a Bachelor’s degree in January—the month she entered treatment again. She told the outlet that she had been sober for almost four years, with the help of her parents.
“My advice to anyone who is struggling with substance abuse would be to be really careful because drugs can really take a hold of your life,” she told Paper. “Everybody is different, obviously, but for me, the mixture of marijuana and whatever other drugs and sometimes drinking really messed up my brain. It really made me a completely different person. I actually am a nice person. I would never feel, say or do any of the things that I did and said to the people I hurt on Twitter.”
Meanwhile, amid her recovery and her continuing education, the actress appears to be pursuing other interests outside of the acting world; In October, she filed to trademark the phrase “Vintage by Amanda Bynes” for use on clothes, cosmetics, jewelry, furniture, and household containers.

That’s me! In February, Nickelodeon announced that it would be reviving several throwback television shows, including All That. Actor Kenan Thompson, who got his start on the ‘90s sketch-comedy series, is set to produce the reboot — and he wants one very special former cast member to be a part of it.
“I would love [for Amanda Bynes to make a cameo],” Thompson, 40, told Us Weekly exclusively while celebrating the finale of the Ultimate Comedy Experience — Road to NYC in New York City on Sunday, April 14. “We would all love it, of course, but it would be up to her.”
The Saturday Night Live star admitted that he has not kept in touch with Bynes, 33, over the years, but has has spoken to several All That stars who will likely be part of the revival. He explained, “I’ve been in touch with Josh [Server] and Kel [Mitchell], for sure. And I know that Lori Beth [Denberg] is down. … I’m hearing Katrina [Johnson] … Angelique [Bates] … [and] Alisa [Reyes] is down, so pretty much the original seven. And then everybody else, we would love to just have them come and show their love and pass the torch to this new casting.”
As for what people can expect from the upcoming comedy series, which is set to premiere this summer? “They found seven awesome kids,” the SNL cast member noted. “Some are going to do impressions, some will do voices, some of them are just going to be their crazy selves.”
All That ran on Nickelodeon from 1994 to 2005 and helped several young stars, including Thompson and Bynes, get their start in comedy. The Hairspray actress made her first appearance on the small-screen hit in November 1996 and her last in May 2002.
Bynes was a regular on the show and became known for starring in the “Ask Ashley” sketch, in which she played a seemingly sweet little girl who offered advice from her bedroom. “That’s me,” she would quip before angrily answering questions that were submitted from viewers.
The She’s the Man star’s participation on All That inspired her Nickelodeon spinoff, The Amanda Show, which aired from 1999 to 2002.

Amanda Bynes will remain in a rehabilitation center for her upcoming birthday.
“Amanda will be spending her 33rd birthday in treatment and will celebrate on April 3,” a source tells Us Weekly exclusively.
In fact, the actress’ stay will be lengthy for the sake of her well-being. “She will remain in treatment for several more months,” the insider adds. “Nothing will be rushed to give Amanda the best possible result after leaving treatment.”
Us confirmed in March that Bynes checked herself into a rehab center in Los Angeles. “Amanda went to rehab in January after suffering a setback which was the result of feeling pressure of being back in the spotlight after her Paper magazine cover,” a source revealed to Us at the time. “Amanda is continuing treatment with the assistance of mental health counselors and addiction specialists.”
The insider also gave Us an update on her condition, saying that the Amanda Show alum was “responding very well to treatment and her team remains extremely optimistic about her future.” Bynes was “moving forward” and acknowledged that “getting help will only benefit her.”
The She’s the Man star opened up about her struggles with depression and addiction in her November 2018 interview with Paper. She recalled smoking marijuana at age 16 before turning to molly, ecstasy, Adderall and briefly cocaine.
Bynes was nearly four years sober at the time of the cover story. “When I was off of [drugs], I was completely back to normal and immediately realized what I had done — it was like an alien had literally invaded my body,” she told the magazine. “That is such a strange feeling.”
In addition, the What I Like About You alum noted her plans to return to acting. “What’s there to lose? I have no fear of the future,” she explained. “I’ve been through the worst and came out the other end and survived it so I just feel like it’s only up from here.”
